I first visited Taipei in 2017 and I always wanted to visit the city again. It was planned to be in 2019, but I settled for Japan in the end, to explore a new country rather than revisiting the same country. Never would I thought Japan will be the last long-trip for now đ
My first impression of Taipei was âwow everything is in Chineseâ, and worst, in traditional Chinese because I learn simplified Chinese in school and Chinese is my second language. It always takes me a long time to read menus and the servers always wondered why I need such a long time to decide what to order - come on, Iâm having a hard time to read and understand the menu đ
Taipei was a REALLY convenient city to visit. Almost every place that I want to visit is easily reachable by metro and I hardly had to walk much. Local food was mostly delicious and affordable, but cafes were quite expensive and not up to standard - I see Taiwan now has lots and lots of pretty cafes, cafe food and coffee places. I have SOOOO many cafes saved!
The most well known attraction in Taipei is probably the Taipei 101, but not till 2019 when the rainbow crosswalk (shown above) was added at Ximending (è„żéšçș/è„żéçș) to promote gender equality and in support of the LGBTQ community. It can be found outside Ximen Station exit 6.
For my 2017 trip, I stayed slightly off Ximending, away from the buzz but still convenient. Ximending is one of the core places in Taipei, quite a central location and just one stop away from the Taipei Main Station. Taipei does not have its own international airport and the nearest is the Taoyuan International Airport. There are several ways you can get to Taipei from the airport, two of the ways are to either take bus 1819 or the airport train straight to Taipei Main Station, and this is why Ximending is a great location to stay at.
The planned itinerary was a 10-day trip, with 2 days at Taichung. It only takes about an hour to reach Taichung from Taipei, via the high speed rail. Taichung is another city that is worth visiting and also filled with lots of amazing food and pretty cafes. There is just so many cafes that are worth visiting, it is definitely impossible to visit them all. So Iâm going to put attractions and local food places as priority, and cafes visiting will be at any free time available in between.
