9am: GinGin Coffee Company
One of the rare cafes that is open in the morning and serving full meals. Instead of the standard minimalistic white or wood concept a lot of Taiwan cafes go for, GinGin is bold in their design, going for a pairing of royal blue and gold!
10am: 2/28 Peace Memorial Park 二二八和平纪念公园/二二八和平紀念公園
A memorial park to the victims of the February 28 incident of 1947 - a violent anti-government uprising in Taiwan, killing thousands of civilians and putting Taiwan under martial law for the next 38yrs. The park was established in 1900 as Taihoku New Park during the Japanese ruling. A radio station was built in 1930 for islandwide broadcasts.
In the 1990s as Taiwan enters modern democracy, the February 28 incident was officially acknowledged for the first time and addressed by President Lee Teng Hui. The former radio station was converted into Taipei 228 Memorial Hall (二二八纪念馆/二二八紀念館) and opened in 1998. Admission is NTD$20.
12:30pm: Old Shanghai SFRY-Dumpling 老上海生煎
If you love soup dumplings (better known as xiao long bao), you’ve got to try this version of dumpling. It’s like gyoza, crispy at the bottom and steamed for the top part; but it’s filled with meat and soup like soup dumplings. You also eat it like how you would with a soup dumpling - take a small bite, drink up the soup, then dip the dumpling in vinegar.
2:30pm: National Palace Museum 国立故宫博物院/國立故宮博物院
The National Palace Museum houses a collection of almost 70,000pcs of ancient Chinese imperial artifacts and artworks, making it one of the largest of its type in the world. Most of the collection are high quality pieces collected by China's emperors.
The musuem was originally established in Beijing in 1925. With the ongoing Chinese Civil War, Chiang Kai Shek ordered the art pieces to be evacuated to Taiwan. However, during the process, the Communist army had already seized control of the National Beijing Palace Museum collection, so not all of the collection could be sent to Taiwan. Admission is NT$350.
5:30pm: Li Yuan Soup Dumplings 犁园汤包馆/犁園湯包館
Li Yuan is one of the locals’ favourite soup dumpling (better known as xiao long bao) place - forget about Din Tai Fung. Other than the usual pork filling, they have a special basil and oyster filling here, which is very well liked. Other than dumplings, they have many side dishes available.
6:30pm: Belle Epoque 美好年代
I first tried Belle Epoque’s drink in Hong Kong back in 2018, the sudden hype for brown sugar boba fresh milk, and Belle Epoque’s was easily one of my favourites, it was so good! Sadly, Belle Epoque hadn’t made its way to SG yet, so I hadn‘t been able to try it ever since. Instead of being just a standard BBT drink kiosk, this store is actually a cafe and offers a wide range of hot food and desserts as well! Don’t miss out on their pretty waterfall souffle pancakes!
