Day 5 - 1950s Hong Kong Housing, Choi Hung Estate, Super Good Matcha Ice Cream

Was super hungry this morning, so I got some street food at a nearby local snack stall that I always wanted to try! It looks so good! Got some Curry Fishballs, Sausages and Pig Intestines. Hong Kong’s fishballs are really tiny and firm, unlike Singapore’s version which are twice in size with a bouncy texture. The curry broth comes in spicy and non-spicy versions. The Fried Pig Intestines skewer was really good too, with a nice chewy texture, and it tasted pretty close to beancurd roll. While for the sausages, they are always good. Walked down to Xing Fu Tang again to grab a cup of Brown Sugar Boba Milk, before I hopped on to the tram to Central. Xing Fu Tang was so good! I wish it was this that came over to Singapore instead of Tiger Sugar.

The items in the photo are short of 1pc each as the items were skewered almost to the end. Ate a piece and adjusted the pieces so that it is easier to hold up for a snap.

Next, I moved on to Sham Shui Po, to the Heritage of Mei Ho House (block 41). This 6-storey estate was built to house the victims of a fire in 1953. It is now run by YHA as a hostel with a museum that tells the story of Mei Ho House. It exhibits how Hong Kong life is like in the 1950s and the history of Mei Ho House. It is pretty similar to how life is like in the olden days of Singapore. The entire family stays in one unit, which is one room. There were no internal partitions and bathrooms were shared. The estate was designed with a ‘H’ structure, with 2 blocks for residents and a central connecting block that consists of the water supply, toilets and bathrooms. Each block has 2 rows of units, aligned back-to-back. Each unit measures 10ft wide and 12ft long, and stays up to 5 adults. Each unit faces the corridor, with a door and windows at the front, and the other 3 sides were walls. There were 384 units when it was first built.

Then, to Prince Edward to get the starry bubble waffle. They do normal bubble waffles as well as the normal round waffles, BelThe waffle is coloured and each bubble has a star made from the original batter. Wanted to get the Purple Sweet Potato Starry Bubble Waffle, but it was sold out. Got the Nightfall Starry Bubble Waffle instead, which is equally great for photo-taking! It was charcoal waffle and Nutella-filled. Next, to Choi Hung Estate to take some photos. Many people were here for photo-taking! ‘Choi Hung’ means rainbow in Cantonese. The estates here are pastel rainbow coloured and the MTR station is rainbow tiled as well! Unlike usual MTR stations that bares a single wall / tiled wall colour.

Moving on to Mongkok, to Queen Sophie. Their tarts were said to have over 300 layers! It was indeed really nice and flaky! Got the Egg Tart, Milk Tart and 2 of their special creations - Matcha Cloud Tart and Lemon Cream Tart. The Egg Tart was good, but definitely lose out to the big players like Tai Cheong Bakery. The filling of the Milk Tart tasted similar to Steamed Milk Pudding. The Matcha Cloud Tart has a matcha chocolate filling, topped with a matcha marshmallow. Lastly, the Lemon Cream Tart which was my favourite! I am a fan of lemon curd and Lemon Meringue Tart. I used to make my own lemon curd weekly to spread on my toast! Then I stopped as it is actually quite an unhealthy option. The Lemon Cream Tart was lemon curd filled, topped with candied peel.

Lastly, I head down to Tsim Sha Tsui, to Via Tokyo for dessert. Ordered the Matcha and Hokkaido Milk Mixed Soft Serve, with Mochi and Adzuki. It was so good! The matcha was so good and strong! All the components were great!
