Vroom Vroom 1st Party

#1: Dessert table set-up

#2: Snapshot of me preparing the dessert table

It was my nephew, Bentley's 1st birthday! And we decided to go with a car theme as 'Bentley' is a car brand. And of course, we adopted some ideas from Disney movie 'Cars'! The colour theme for the party was black, white and red, as checkered pattern is the must-thing for a car race and red is just the perfect colour to go along. This is the biggest party I've ever been involved, in terms of the amount of work put in, not the scale of it. We started planning like 1-2 months ahead. And right till the party day itself, I was still preparing some of the props.

#3: Dessert layout

For Bentley's birthday, we (my sis-in-law and I) decided to have a dessert table, as dessert table is the 'in' thing now. We decided to do it ourselves as it is not worth to spend $1500 - $2000 just for some simple desserts. In total, we spent about $250 on the dessert table.

Just an introduction on the desserts (clockwise direction)... Since we are going with the cars and Disney cars theme, I thought of having a different character for each item.

#4: Cozy Cone Eclairs

#5: Cozy Cone Motel

Sally

Cozy Cone Motel

The eclairs were from the caterer. Cozy Cone Motel is a motel in Radiator Springs. The motel consists of 5 cone-shaped buildings that serve as motel rooms. So right beside the eclairs, I placed 5 cones to represent the 5 buildings. The cones are handmade by me.

#6: Mallow Pop with Nuts and Bolts

#7: Tow Mater Towing & Salvage

#8: Nuts and Bolts

Mater

Tow Mater Towing & Salvage

'Mallow Pop', short-form for marshmallow pop. Tow Mater Towing & Salvage is a towing company in Radiator Springs. In a garage, the two must things to have are nuts and bolts. So playing with the word, I had 100s and 1000s (sprinkles) to represent the 'nuts and bolts'. Coating the marshmallows with a layered of tempered chocolate and then the sprinkles.

#9: Flo's Roadway Tiramisu

#10: Flo's V8 Cafe

Flo

Flo's V8 Cafe

Flo's V8 Cafe is a car cafe for drinking oil and gas in Radiator Springs. Tiramisu is an Italian dessert that consists of coffee-dipped sponge fingers, layered with a cream mixture made mainly from egg yolks, marscapone cheese and whipped cream, topped with cocoa powder. I actually bought the wrong cocoa powder, so it turned out to be black instead of brown as it's cocoa powder EXTRA DARK! But after powdering the cups, I thought it looks quite okay. It actually resembles the road and matches well with the theme colours. So I had some random party-related road signs for the cups.

Another thing to note is the speed limit. I intentionally put it at '89' as it's the year that my brother and sis-in-law was born in. Recipe from here.

#11: Birthday cake

This is Bentley's birthday cake and we are all super satisfied with the cake! Thumbs up! On the left was the sample picture and on the right is Bentley's birthday cake - 90% similarity!! (checkered flag, candle and toy car, self-provide) Not only does the cake looks good, it tastes good too! This baker was recommended by my mom's friend and we were so glad that we had her to get the cake done. We got it at $250 - 3 layer 6" cake and a 4 layer 10" cake, vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream. I believe it's a really reasonable price as fondant cakes are usually priced about $80/kg for simple designs. This is about 3-4kg? And as you can see, the design is quite complicated. Most importantly, she baked it on the day of collection so it's super fresh. Because usually pre-order cakes are done 1-2 days in advance. And another reason why I think it's reasonably-priced because the quotation that we got from another baker, which was my sis-in-law's friend's friend, it was $400 and the top tier is dummy cake. So we thought it's a $150 difference and we are getting a bigger cake, so we decided to go for the 2nd baker.

Anyway, the toy car was from 7-11 for $4.50 and the candle was from Phoon Huat for $0.60.

#12: Luigi's Nyonya Kueh

#13: Luigi's Casa Della Tires

Luigi

Luigi's Casa Della Tires

Luigi's Casa Della Tires is a tire shop in Radiator Springs. Ang ku kueh and red eggs are the essentials in a traditional Chinese celebration, especially during the the baby's full month. Red eggs symbolizes birth and new life, and ang ku kueh represents longevity and good luck. It's not a must during 1st birthdays but we just had them. The round ang ku kueh-s looks like the tires, so I chose Luigi for this item.We got the kuehs from Ji Xiang Confectionery at Everton Park - one of the most popular places that sells ang ku kueh. But for me, I prefer the ones at Alexandra Village.

#14: Lizze's Cupcakes

#15: Radiator Springs Curios

Lizzie

Radiator Springs Curios

Radiator Springs Curios is a gadget and souvenir shop in Radiator Springs. Bumper sticker inspired cupcakes with black, red and white frosting. The idea of bumper stickers as the shop itself is decorated with lots of bumper stickers and the racing cars in the movie has stickers all over them as well. The cupcakes are from Betty Crocker's.

#16: Logos for the cupcakes

#17: Doc Hudson's Organic Red Eggs

#18: Ornament Valley Mechanical Clinic

Doc Hudson

Ornament Valley Mechanical Clinic

Doc Hudson is the doctor of Radiator Springs, Doctor of Internal Combustion. He takes care of the health of the cars and attends to their aches and pains. I thought eggs are good for health so I used Doc Hudson as the character for this item. But the eggs are just normal eggs, not organic.

#19: Team McQueen Racing Cookies

Lightning McQueen

Team McQueen Headquarters

Team McQueen Headquarters is not part of the movie. It's actually one of the attraction area at Disney's Hollywood Studios where you get to see the models of McQueen and Mater. So we thought of having car-shaped cookies with a letter 'B' on it, representing Bentley. I got the cookie cutter from Bake-It-Yourself at Circular Road for $2.50 I think. The cookies are from Betty Crocker's.

#20: Sarge's Surplus Sandwich

#21: Sarge's Surplus Hut

Sarge

Sarge's Surplus Hut

Sarge's Surplus Hut is a shop in Radiator Springs that sells various military-related items and other army surplus supplies. I chose Sarge for the sandwiches as bread is the most convenient staple food for the soldiers and during camping. And I had the shop's logo and checkered flags for the sandwiches. They are picnic ham and black pepper tuna sandwiches.

#22: Food labels

So now moving on to the decorations...

For the decorations, I got some ideas from the internet.

#23: Template from internet

#24: Information signage

#25: Template from internet

#26: Welcome sign.

#27: Welcome sign - actual design

#28: Thank you sign

#29: Thank you sign - actual design

Loving the font for the word 'Bentley'! It's a baby boy in a toy car, so matchy with the theme!

#30: Template from internet

#31: Dessert table set-up

Checkered table skirt from the party shop. We bought a really cheap black cloth from the cloth shop for the table top. It's selling at $2 per yard. The cupcake stand is from Taobao and the boxes for the birthday cake and tiramisu are just regular boxes and tissue box wrapped with large red construction paper.

#32: Checkered flag banner and helium balloons

We got the flag banner from the party shop. Their helium balloons are selling at $1.20 each, which I find it's one of the cheapest rate in Singapore.

#33: 'Pit Stop Snacks' - signage for the dessert table

#34: 'Pit Stop Snacks' - actual design

A pit stop is where a racing vehicle stops at for a 'recharge'. So a 'pit stop snacks' station for the humans to get a recharge! With Bentley logo and a red sports car.

#35: Dinoco tentage

#36: Rust-eze tentage

Dinoco is an oil company seen in Toy Story and Cars. Rust-eze is a bumper ointment company in Cars. They are sponsors for Lightning McQueen. The square portion is a styrofoam cube and the pyramid portion is just paper glued into a pyramid shape. I stuck blue tack at the tip of the pyramid to hold the flag in place.

#37: Finish line of the rack track

Didn't notice the car was in the opposite direction when I took this picture, someone meddled with it.

#38: Function room

Last but not least, I love this function room! It's so big and spacious, high ceiling. Enough room for the food, the dessert table and almost 70 people. There is even a simple kitchenette with fridge, sink, plates and glasses. The tables and chairs are black, and the walls are white - which makes it a perfect background for my decors - matching well with the theme. Opposite the dessert table is the main entrance of the function room. So when guests enter, the first thing they will notice is the main highlight of the party - the dessert table.

By the way, this condo belongs to my sis-in-law's friend. With the room near to the pool, playground and the bbq pit area, it allows our guests to have alternative sitting areas. They can sit at the bbq area if they want to avoid the air con or to smoke. They can also sit at the beach chairs provided along the pool to enjoy the sun and relax. Next to the function room, are the toilets, changing rooms and the play room (room with playground and toys). The condo is located in Orchard area, central district. So it makes it convenient for our guests, coming from all parts of Singapore.
