Today’s itinerary is exploring the Great Ocean Road! I booked the tour on kkday for $112 after a 15% discount! There are a few pick-up locations available, and I chose Melbourne Marriot Hotel, the nearest to my Airbnb.
Why is Great Ocean Road so popular?
Completed in 1932, the Great Ocean Road was built as a memorial to Victoria’s WWI fighters and serves as a lasting reminder of their war service and sacrifice. It is Australia’s largest war memorial, and the 242km stretch of road offers beautiful landscapes and views!
One of the main highlights of the Great Ocean Road is The Twelve Apostles! They are a collection of limestone rocks found at Port Campbell National Park, formed by erosion.
The guide explained quite a few things along the way, but most of us had fallen asleep as it’s just too early in the morning. First stop was Torquay Beach, where we had a short morning tea break, some tea cakes and instant drinks prepared by the guide. Followed by Anglesea, and then stopping by the iconic Great Ocean Road arch – Eastern View Memorial Arch.
Next, we stopped at Kennett River, got down to try our luck in spotting some wild koalas, and we managed to see one high up in the trees! Thankfully, there’s a café over here and I could quickly get a good caffeine fix. Then we arrived at Apollo Bay, where we are given slightly more time here, there were lots of eateries and shops. Decided to have lunch at Sandy Feet Café, got a pulled pork burger and another cup of coffee.
Following, we stopped by Maits Rest Rainforest Walk for a nice 850m walk around the forest. Really amazing cooling and fresh atmosphere! Lastly, arriving at Port Campbell National Park, which consists of a few spots – Twelve Apostles, Island Archway, The Razorback and Loch Ard Gorge. Of course, I was the most excited for the Twelve Apostles, but it turned out to be a little underwhelming.
The entire trip was about 13hrs – 7:30am pick-up and back in Melbourne at around 8:30pm, about a 3hrs drive from Melbourne. Dropped off at The Savoy Hotel and got Mcd for dinner, and that’s it for the day!
