I first visited Sydney back in 2014 as a school trip. It was my first non-Asian country experience and I love it! I couldn’t stop taking photos of the old buildings, so much history!
Sydney is the capital city for the state of New South Wales, Australia. Residents of the city are known as "Sydneysiders". The Aboriginal Australians have inhabited the Sydney area for more than 30,000yrs. Thousands of engravings remain throughout the city, making it one of the richest in Australia in terms of Aboriginal archaeological sites.
In 1770, Lieutenant James Cook and his crew were the first Europeans to arrive at the city. In 1778, the First Fleet of 11 ships and about 850 convicts, led by Arthur Phillip founded Sydney as a British exile colony, the first European settlement in Australia. Penal transportation to New South Wales ended soon after Sydney was incorporated as a city in 1842. After World War 2, Sydney experienced mass migration and became one of the most multi-cultural cities in the world.
If you are getting around Sydney by public transport, you will need an Opal card - a tap-and-go public transport card which allows you to ride the bus, metro, train, light rail and ferry. It is relatively easy to get from the Sydney airport to the city, which is just 4 train stops away. With a beautiful river flowing through the middle of the city, hop on a ferry to help get across.
