2:30pm: Nero’s Golden House / Domus Aurea
After the Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD, Emperor Nero ordered the reconstruction of his residence, Domus Transitoria - an extended version and the new palace was named as Domus Aurea. The construction of the Domus Aurea has been considered the most extravagant construction in the history of Rome.
The new 80-hectare complex with 300 rooms was the most striking and most expensive palace in Rome, with lots of marble, ivory and gold leaf walls. Emperor Nero committed suicide in 68 AD, so he never had the chance to see the completion of the palace. Since Emperor Nero was not particularly well loved by the people, the palace was then partly demolished to erase the memories of Nero and certain areas had buildings built over it, like the Baths of Trajan. The palace’s marble, ivory and jewels were also stripped off within a decade.
